Briefings and orientations

Volunteer pre departure briefing

Lattitude Global Volunteering organises briefing sessions for its volunteers prior to their departure to their host country. The briefing sessions are designed to help prepare volunteers for everything they may encounter whilst volunteering abroad, with specific advice and guidance given in relation to the country they will be working in. The briefing occurs before departure and is further supported by the in-country orientation that volunteers undertake once they have landed in their host countries, run by the relevant Country Manager.

The pre departure briefing includes:

Volunteer in-country orientation

Upon arriving in the country of their placement. Volunteers are picked up from the airport and taken to their in-country orientation run by the Lattitude Global Volunteering Country Manager. The idea of the orientation is to help volunteers settle into their host country and prepare for their placements.

The orientations vary in style and content as to best fit in with the individual country where the volunteer is placed. But in general the orientation will last a number of days and will be split between learning about the country and culture and how to best get along, with some free time activities. Many in-country orientations also include specific training and courses as to further prepare volunteers for their experience. This may include a teaching skills course or a language course, all of which will be discussed and arranged in conjunction with the Lattitude Global Volunteering Volunteer Coordinator prior to departing.

As well as learning about the country that volunteers are placed in, volunteers will also further look into what will be expected of them over the coming months. It is very important to Lattitude that volunteers do not only enjoy themselves but that they also contribute positively to their host community and so understanding what this entails will be discussed in detail prior to starting.

The Country Manager will also discuss how best to contact them if they are needed, as well as ensure that they have each volunteers individual contact details (on top of those of their hosts, which the Country Manager will already have), should they need to be contacted. In some instances this may be helped by the Country Manager by the provision of SIM cards or a ‘communications pack’. Volunteers will be informed of this and other requirements well before their departure so they are aware of the situation (i.e. if they should bring an old rugged mobile phone with them, to use with a SIM card). Prior to starting their placement Country Managers ensure that volunteers are aware and understand the Lattitude Global Volunteering support structure and who to contact based on the need or urgency of the request or situation.
