Outdoor Camp Assistant
Lattitude Global Volunteering has established partnerships with a wide variety of camps and outdoor education centres. As an Outdoor Activities Instructor, your outdoor skills will be put to good use, especially with your involvement in such activities as kayaking, skiing, fencing, rock climbing, horse riding, hiking, archery, mountain biking, ropes, orienteering, snorkelling or sailing. You’ll also assist with the supervision of camp-goers and participate in the general running and maintenance of the camp.
Our Outdoor Activity Instructor role will be to assist groups in activities such as high and low ropes courses, canoeing, mountain biking, bushwalking, campfire cooking, hut building and archery to name a few.
Details will vary between individual placements, but generally you will be working with groups of school children between the ages of 8-18 who will be accompanied by school teachers. As a volunteer you may also be required to assist with mealtimes and general maintenance duties. Volunteers in camps are never short of things to get involved in!
You will be welcomed into the camp as an ordinary member of staff and will participate in ongoing training which could see you gain outdoor qualifications as well as increase your knowledge and expertise of the outdoors.
These placements suit active individuals looking to spend a large portion of their time abroad experiencing the very best of the great outdoors.
Lattitude Global volunteering work with a number of hosts that provide outdoor activity breaks for groups of children and young adults. Lattitude volunteers support these placements in a number of ways but primarily in supporting the Activity Instructors as they run a number of exciting outdoor activities. These may include climbing, rafting, high ropes, kayaking, hiking etc. The range of activities is huge!
The camps are located throughout Canada but in general they will be situated to make the most of Canada’s incredible mountains, rivers and lakes.
Needless to say these placements are perfect for volunteers that love the outdoors and fancy spending some time living and working among some of the most beautiful scenery in the world!
If you decide that you would like to undertake one of our Outdoor Education placements in New Zealand, you will be placed in one our host outdoor activity camps located throughout the country. Due to the nature of these placements, camps are usually situated in rural locations of exceptional natural beauty, near, for example, Rotorua, Matamata and Huntly. Your duties will be varied, and will include leading school groups in activities such as abseiling, high ropes courses, rock climbing, mountain biking, BMX, archery, Frisbee, golf, raft building and obstacle courses. As well as groups of children, you will sometimes work with church and corporate groups. Aside from outdoor activities, you will also provide a helping hand during mealtimes and in the organisation of evening activities. During quieter periods when there are fewer groups visiting the camps, you also may be required to help out with other general camp maintenance duties.
These vary from big organisations with a large number of seasonal young staff, to small family-run operations. Volunteer tasks include leading group activities such as archery, ropes, abseiling, orienteering, assault courses, canoeing and overseeing team building games. You can also gain qualifications in these activities. In the evening you might run sessions playing games, singing songs etc. You may also be asked to help with catering or maintenance. Field Study Centres run courses for groups to study ecology and geography. You will usually be required to assist with the domestic supervision of incoming student groups of all ages.
