Daniel Sewell’s volunteering experience in the UK!

Posted on the 6th March 2018

Daniel Sewell is a New Zealander here in the UK volunteering as a School Assistant at a performing arts school! He agreed to answer some questions about his first few months in the UK… read on to find out what he’s been getting up to!

What country are you volunteering in and when did you arrive?

I am volunteering in England and I arrived on the 3rd of January 2018!

How did you find orientation, what did you do?

Both the orientations in NZ and abroad were great for meeting the other gappies, learning the ins and out of the job, and even getting a chance to explore London.

What is your volunteering placement and what do you do on a day-to-day basis?

My placement is at Tring Park Performing Arts School. It is unique in the sense that some of our jobs center around the world of dance and drama, such as working in the school’s theatre, but also is very similar to other placements where Academic admin and boarding house work is needed.

What is the best part about your volunteering placement?

Easily hanging out with the students, especially those that are in the boys boarding house where I do most of my work – you’ll come to find that no matter the school, there is always a diverse and entertaining group of kids.

What skills have you gained from your placement?

A sense of independence would be the biggest thing, knowing how to find my own way around and look after oneself – from the big things such as organising my own travel to doing the washing.

What have you been doing in your free time?

Travel is the big thing, I went to Ireland in February for example, but using the time to recharge with a movie or to catch up with people is also good.

Would you recommend Lattitude?

Of course! Such an amazing opportunity with all the benefits of travel, self-growth, and work experience at an affordable price and without all the hassle of figuring out how to set up your own gap year.
